We need more third places, and heres why

We need more third places, and heres why

So for context, a third place is a sociological concept which is basically the idea that your home is your first place, your school or work are your secondary ones and your third place is a communal space, sometimes referred to as “living room of society”.

They are YOUR places where you choose to spend your free time, where you socialise, where you partake in activities that interest you.

Think of it in the context of being a regular at a bar or coffee shop, the relationships you form with the staff start to become part of your wider community. People you look forward to speaking to and interacting with that you wouldn’t necessarily interact with at home or at work. other examples include joining a running club, a book club, a gym, volunteering for a charity, going, or just even going to events.

A lot of the time, the relationships you make at your third place, are unique to that space. You wouldn’t necessarily meet these individuals at home or at school, it’s a whole new community you’re building.

Third places can have a huge impact on our mental health, helping us develop a sense of belonging, which is especially important in the world we live in now where social isolation and loneliness is the norm. It provides an opportunity to build and nurture meaningful relationships outside of our immediate family and work colleagues.

Following the pandemic, a majority of us now work from home, meaning our two first places have merged into one so it’s more important than ever that we cultivate and nurture our third places.

Third places are such an important part of a city’s culture, and building a sense of community in the city.

We as a girls-only wellness brand, try our best to provide women and girls of all ages a third place. a place where you feel welcome, supported, encouraged and like you belong. Whether you’ve only come to one event or to a lot of them, we hope that Girls on the go will become your third place.
